Supplements are an important part of any comprehensive approach to wellness and beauty because even the healthiest of diets can lack essential nutrients essential for optimal skin, hair and body function. Inside the Beauty Ingestibles Trend with 8G Founder Lady Dawn Russell

I’m at the Peninsula Beverly Hills on an uncharacteristically rainy Friday in LA, trying to visualize a mountain of greens shrinking into a quarter-sized tablet. Russell is the founder of 8G, a wellness brand that counts Helena Christensen and Keri Russell among its celebrity fans. She is taking me through the process of creating her effervescent tablet, which fizzes into green juice when dropped into a glass of water.

Her supplement is named for the eight greens it contains: spinach, wheatgrass, kale, blue-green algae, spirulina, chlorella, barley grass and aloe vera. Russell’s focus centers on the health benefits that come with boosting your daily greens intake, but I happen to be more interested in 8G’s beauty benefits. As Russell mentions receiving emails from customers noting an improvement in eczema, I recall hearing about the supplement for the first time—from a fellow beauty writer. To me, it represents the next step in tailoring your diet to match your skin’s needs.

Meet Lady Dawn Russell, the American Mom with a Downton Abbey Life!

The series finale of Downton Abbey is fast approaching, but for Dawn Russell it’s simply a way of life. The American mom of two became ‘Lady James Russell’ in 2005 when she married Lord James Russell, a member of one of England’s oldest noble families.

Jamie’s oldest brother, Andrew, is the current Duke of Bedford and resides in the historic Woburn Abbey, located an hour north of London. Although Dawn, Jamie and their two boys live primarily in London, Woburn (pronounced WO-bun) is the Russell family home and the site of Christmas celebrations, four-wheeling on the vast grounds (15,000 acres in total!) and playtime with cousins. Russell, who was diagnosed with stage III lymphatic cancer at age 25, is also the founder of 8G, a supplement tablet that launched last year and is available at Nordstrom.

“8G is everything I’ve learned about greens and health through my own personal journey,” she says.

Cancer survivor makes kale tablets that give greens the fizzy Alka Seltzer treatment

Thirsty for a green fizz?

A West Village cancer survivor is giving kale the Alka Seltzer treatment with an effervescent tablet that distills eight greens into a frothy cocktail.

Creator Dawn Russell spent several years developing the bubbling concoction after relying heavily on greens to recover from Stage III lymphatic cancer when she was 25, since an infection prevented her from undergoing chemotherapy.

Russell, now 40, credits consuming the super plants with detoxing and oxygenating her blood and balancing her pH levels.

“My experience with greens has been nothing short of life-changing,” said Russell in a statement.

Women in Business Q&A: Dawn Russell, Founder of 8Greens

“I lost count of how many greens I researched and tried. My recovery, and all my research showed me how important these particular greens were to internal health. When I was sick these were the greens that I noticed had the greatest impact on how I felt and my recovery. They were life-changing, and I do not say that lightly.”

“Identifying these ingredients was only half the battle. How do you get them into people’s diets? Into busy parents, stressed business people, our kids, and all of us when we travel? I asked myself what are the greens I want to put into my kids every day. But who has barley greens hanging around their kitchen? Or a box of wheat grass to cut and grind into a shot that then tastes horrible anyway? I had the force of being ill and desperate: I would have tried just about anything if I thought it could help me get better and feel better. These 8 proved incredibly powerful, but also the most difficult to get into my family’s daily diet. Try getting a 5 year old to eat spirulina! Well now mine asks for it every day through his 8G.”

4 HEALTHY RECIPES FROM AMERICAN MODEL TURNED BRITISH ARISTOCRAT DAWN RUSSELL

Dawn Russell’s life changed dramatically when she was diagnosed with stage 3 (out of 4) lymphatic cancer at the age of 25.

Countless doctors visits and attempts at trying alternative forms of medicine led to fruitless results, but she soon realized that what she chose to include in her diet greatly affected how she felt. Greens proved to be the most beneficial, particularly the combination of spinach, spirulina, aloe vera, wheatgrass, blue-green algae, barley grass, chlorella, and kale, which is what her effervescent 8Greens tablet is made out of.

To find more ways to include this dissolvable disk in her family’s meals, she began cooking with it. And with the stamp of approval from her husband and two beautiful young boys, the former Donna Karan and Ralph Lauren model came up with her latest endeavor, The 8Greens Cookbook. While the majority of these recipes are Russell’s own, she has also teamed up with some incredible talents, like friend Gwyneth Paltrow, nutritionist Kelly LeVeque (who has celebrity clients such as Jessica Alba and Emmy Rossum), and restaurateur Juan Santa Cruz (of London’s Casa Cruz). Below, four exclusive recipes from Russell’s forthcoming book that are not only healthy, but delicious, too.

LADY DAWN RUSSELL’S 30-MINUTE RATATOUILLE IS THE EASIEST (AND HEALTHIEST) RECIPE YOU’LL MAKE ALL WEEK

Getting dinner on the table—let alone a nutritious one—is a challenge Dawn Russell knows all too well.

The American mom of two, who became “Lady James Russell” in 2005 when she married Lord James Russell, is all about simplifying healthy eating—like with her one-pot ratatouille recipe shared exclusively in this week’s PEOPLE. The high-fiber dish, which can be made in 30 minutes or less, is one of many recipes in her upcoming 8Greens Cookbook.

“Every recipe has passed the key criteria of being easy to make (if I can, you definitely can), containing fabulously healthy ingredients, and being eaten with enthusiasm by my children, husband and friends,” she says of the book also featuring dishes from stars like Gwyneth Paltrow and Jessica Alba‘s nutritionist.

The Lady and the Greens: Bringing the Kale to the People, One Fizzing Tablet at a Time

A bottle of green juice has replaced the prepackaged protein bar as the snack du jour, but the stuff is difficult to produce at home and prohibitively expensive to buy, or hard to find, depending on where you live. Dawn Russell, a former model who lives in London and New York City, wanted to change that.

Russell decided to experiment with a portable form of greens that would cost little more than a dollar a day. After testing 263 versions over three years, she arrived at a winning format, an effervescent tablet à la Alka-Seltzer with a palatable lemon lime flavor.

Each green disc is made with eight dehydrated greens (giving it its name, 8G), including kale, spinach, spirulina, aloe vera, and the same nutrient dense algae from Oregon. The point is not for it to be a meal replacement but an immune-building pick-me-up, which is what friends like Keri Russell (no relation) and Helena Christensen have been clamoring for.

VANITY FAIR NOMINATES DAWN RUSSELL

A stylish cancer survivor is an inspiration to teens.

Dawn, Lady Russell—who grew up in Oregon, Mexico, Paris, Massachusetts, and Manhattan—has in her time been a prepster, an aspiring journalist, a model, a motorhead (she’s raced Formula One cars), and the wife of a British aristocrat (her husband, environmental investor Lord James Russell, is the Duke of Bedford’s younger brother). Yet Russell’s defining identity has been that of cancer patient. Diagnosed at 25 with a potentially fatal case of Stage III lymphatic cancer, Russell, too debilitated to withstand traditional chemo or radiation, dedicated four post-operative years to investigating non-Western treatments.

“Through the process of healing myself, I found my passion in Eastern medicine,” she says. “It gave me my center, my anchor.”

6 REASONS YOU’RE TIRED ALL THE TIME (THAT HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH SLEEP)

The only thing more frustrating than feeling exhausted all the time is feeling exhausted all the time… and not knowing why.

But in truth, while sleep may be the primary factor in your daily energy levels, it's hardly the only one.

The problem: You're not getting enough daily nutrients.

8G Essential Greens Booster
In addition to impacting how well you sleep, an imbalanced diet can mess with your daily energy levels. Fatigue is usually your body's way of telling you it needs something, and it could very well be some necessary vitamins and nutrients. Try to maintain a healthy balance of fats, protein, and carbs. Even if you try going back to basics for just a few days, you might be surprised by how much better you feel. (And if you want to be extra sure that you're meeting all your daily vitamin requirements, consider taking a supplement.)

Russell is the creator of 8G, a new dietary supplement that comes in effervescent tablets that dissolves in water and contain dehydrated spinach, wheatgrass, kale, blue green algae, spirulina, chlorella, barley grass and aloe vera. DAWN RUSSELL ON KISSING THE BUTLER, THE SECRET TO PERFECT SKIN AND MAKING BROWNIES HEALTHIER

We’ve heard through the grapevine that you typically wear little to no makeup. And you have such beautiful skin! What’s your secret?

A BRITISH ROYAL ON EXPENSIVE ALGAE AND BALANCE

"What my green juice means to me: It came out of necessity. When I was very ill, I was using extreme amounts of these greens to help me. Once I got back on my feet, I didn’t have the hours to go and get local greens and try different recipes. It became way too time consuming. 8G was a five-year labor of love, to figure out a way how to make these eight greens and one grass taste good, with zero sugar. The next challenge was getting it cost effective. I know everyone’s getting the eight greens they need. I don’t want people to think: Oh, now I don’t need a green salad or vegetables. This is just a helper. The first thing the greens do is that they detox your body and then they oxygenate — that’s why they help your skin so much. And then there are huge long-term health benefits: anti-aging and a strengthened immunity. It also helps you alkalize your body and it really cleans out toxins."

Green Dream: Dawn Russell’s Quest to Take Spinach, Spirulina to the Masses

She admits she has a sweet tooth and a weakness for red wine, so why should anyone listen to Dawn Russell when it comes to healthy eating habits?

Because Russell also has a passion for greens — eight of them in particular — and says they saved her life when she was fighting stage three cancer and a bone infection related to the disease when she was in her 20s. Now she’s cancer-free but still pounds greens to flush out toxins and maintain a healthy diet.

More than five years ago, she decided to spin her research and experience with greens into a product that she insisted be accessible to all. The result is 8Greens, a dietary supplement in the form of a tablet that fizzes in water. It contains spinach, wheatgrass, kale, blue-green algae, spirulina, chlorella, barley grass and aloe vera.

The product took five years to perfect and Russell also had to steamroll over all the nay-saying scientists and manufacturers, who insisted what she wanted to do was impossible.

I thought that I was out of options until a deskside appointment was set up with Lady Dawn Russell, the creator of 8Greens ($25 for two tubes), an effervescent drink supplement.

I liked how it tasted so much that I started drinking it regularly. It’s actually become one of my favorite midday treats. And unlike something like a protein bar or an acai bowl, I know this is fueling my body with something good and the nutrients I’m probably lacking, and I'm sure glad I discovered it.”

Like many people, I grew up thinking doctors were all-knowing. You get sick, they know how to make you better. But when I was diagnosed with melanoma… age 25, I quickly learned that there are limits to what physicians can accomplish. While the lesson was a difficult one, it helped me to discover a way of life that’s healthier than any I’d considered before I became ill.

Out of four possible stages of melanoma, I was stage 3. My prognosis? There was only a 65 percent chance I’d live to see my 30th birthday.

…the results of the surgery were exactly what I’d hoped—all of the nodes were clean. Still, about a week later, I suffered a major postoperative infection that required weeks of intravenous and oral antibiotics. By the end of it, my body was ravaged. I was weak, my skin was greenish and I’d lost a lot of weight. …

A year after my surgery, I still couldn’t get through the day without naps. Working was out of the question. But despite my fatigue and near-constant infections, I couldn’t accept this limited life. So I sought out top alternative practitioners, all of whom claimed success in treating people with cancer.

The first person I saw was an energy healer who promised to release the “negative toxins” within me. ... The immediate effects were wonderful, but they lasted no longer than an afternoon. A few months later, a naturopath I visited prescribed a liver-detox concoction… All it did was leave me chained to the toilet. The homeopath I saw afterward recommended an incredibly detailed organic diet… Following his demands didn’t help me rebuild my life, it became my life. I told him to shove it after six weeks.

I’d had it. I suddenly woke up and realized that there had to be a way to combine the scientific standards of Western medicine with the holistic philosophies of Eastern therapies… After extensive research, I discovered the Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine, a network of top medical centers dedicated to a holistic approach to healing, blending the best of Eastern and Western therapies. The name that kept coming up was Woodson Merrell, M.D… I met with him in the spring of 2004 and knew immediately that he could really help me.

The first problem he zeroed in on was my ongoing fatigue and frequent illnesses, which seemed to stem largely from my depressed immune system…When he told me that one of the supplements I’d taken had been found to promote the growth of skin cancer, I realized just how important it is to have a doctor overseeing all aspects of my care, Eastern and Western alike.

I certainly don’t have all the answers, but this much I know: Nearly five years after being diagnosed, I’m still cancer-free. Do I have surgery to thank for that? Most definitely. But I now realize that no single approach or person will ever have all the answers. It was only when I combined the best of both worlds that I was able to restore my health.

Green Queen

Lady Dawn Russell launched her line of effervescent 8Greens tablets, packed with superfoods including spinach, spirulina, and wheatgrass, in 2015; now she’s making it easier to veg out. The 8G Cookbook features more than 40 recipes – ranging from basics, such as red sauce, to her friend Gwyneth Paltrow’s turkey meatballs – that have been tweaked to incorporate an 8G tablet for a boost of stealth nutrition. Driven by her concern that most Americans fail to meet the U.S. RDA for vegetable consumption (two to three cups), Russell caters not only to those already committed to plant power, but also to the devoutly leaf-averse, offering tips for kid-friendly fare, breakfast favorites like the Peninsula Beverly Hills’ decadent blueberry pancakes, and an entire section devoted to cocktails. Bottoms up.

Vitamin G

Your parents always told you to eat your greens, but 20 cups of broccoli, 7 cups of lima beans and 10 cups of asparagus a day? Dawn Russell, a former model and cancer survivor who lives in London, developed 8G, effervescent tables that dissolve in water and contain dehydrated greens and pack vitamins C, B6, B3, B6, B12 and zinc into a 9-calorie, lemon-lime drink. Greens and their photonutrients were the first things that made her feel better after cancer surgery, she said during a recent Bay Area visit and lunch at the home of philanthropist Saki Fisher.

It made me realize that whilst it’s trendy all these greens very few people truly what they do and also how to incorporate them into our really busy daily life. How can Moms get it in their kids when they are just trying to get their teeth brushed and off to school.

So for 5 years I did 263 prototypes and ended up with the absolute best product I can produce for you.

I have a five year old that demands it every morning on his way to school. It has a lemon-lime flavour so they love it. They think it’s a soda practically.

8Greens Make Water Palatable for People who Don't Like Water

Like 95 percent of models and actresses, Khloé Kardashian considers water to be "magical." She even keeps a fruit-infused water shrine in her fridge. But I feel successful if I gag down one glass. I hate water so much that some days I subsist on coffee, sugar-free Red Bull, and Perrier alone, without a single sip of flat agua. Even during an exercise class, drinking from my water bottle is a struggle. And until recently I was fine with that, because while studies show that water increases blood flow, there's no concrete evidence that binge-drinking water actually improves the look of skin.

Then a publicist slipped me a tube of 8 Greens: "It will change your life," she said with the intensity of a therapist. It won't, I thought. I was prepared to hate the stuff because snooze, another nutritional supplement. But 8G is different. The water-boosting tablet promises as much zinc as 10 cups of asparagus, the vitamin C of five oranges, and the vitamin B12 of SO MUCH yogurt. Each dose has spinach, wheatgrass, kale, blue green algae, and more buzzy greens, but what keeps me dropping 8G tablets in my water is that it transforms H2O into something palatable without using chemicals or food coloring. The light taste is comparable to Emergen-C: tart, fizzy, neutral. I'm still not sold on drinking water neat, but maybe I've found my "magic.”

SHE BATTLED CANCER, THEN CREATED A SUPPLEMENT TO BOOST NUTRITION

While recovering from stage 3 lymphatic cancer, Lady Dawn Russell, 41, struggled to fit greens like kale and wheat grass into her daily diet. So the wife of Lord James Russell, an English nobleman, developed 8G, a supplement that delivers eight greens in one dissolvable tablet. “When I was extremely sick, I consumed high amounts of nutrient-dense greens, and it was truly life-changing,” she says. “Greens – and eating healthily in general – calms, centers and focuses me."

Lady Dawn Russell

Dawn Russell is teaching us that a bottle a day keeps the doctor away. But she’s not talking about the stuff you’ll find in a Times Square chain. No, her fight against lymphatic cancer took her around the world on a quest for the greens that would save her life. And now, fifteen years and 263 trials later, she’s sharing them with us. Introducing 8Greens, the friendly (tasty) little tablet jam-packed with as much vitamin B6 as in 11 cups of Lima beans, vitamin B12 as in 10 cups of milk, vitamin B5 as in 30 cups of broccoli, Zinc as in 10 cups of asparagus… the list goes on. Long story short, Dawn’s done the work for you.

“I wasn’t going to make 8Greens unless these eight greens were included, particularly the blue-green algae. Blue green algae is commonly known as the most powerful green there is as it is the only one 100% non-man manipulated.

These greens detox, oxygenate, and make the body alkaline. We are at the beauty counters at Bergdorf Goodman, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, and Peninsula Spas because these greens are so amazing for the skin.

8Greens is an effervescent tablet rather than a pill or powder. With no excess spilling, it is easy to travel with; simply drops one in a glass of water and drink. “I wanted to make getting greens easy, tasty, and affordable. Not everyone has the time to make a green juice, a smoothie, or healthy nutritional choices. 8Greens is perfect for late morning starts, the 4PM slump and the days you don’t eat right."

"I used to take Emergen-C every day while traveling, but they’re filled with lots of things that don’t actually help your health. 8 Greens kind of does the same thing but it’s all-natural and filled with greens. I’m not sure how they get that all into a little pill, but you feel the same as you do with Emergen-C, but I think it’s a little bit better for you overall. And then I do yoga twice a week and I workout with a trainer less than that, whenever it’s conducive to my schedule. I do put my work schedule first, which I shouldn’t. 8GREENS: A Review

If I’m lucky I eat three servings of vegetables a day. Those servings usually come from a red bell pepper, a cucumber or two, and carrots. While colorful, I’m definitely not eating enough dark leafy greens, which are essential due to being full of vitamins – mainly Vitamins C, B5, B6, B12, and the mineral Zinc! Note: If you aren’t sure why you need those vitamins and minerals this website has a handy guide to what they are and why they’re needed in your body.

However, a new solution has come on the market and it is 8GREENS, a fizzy tablet that you simply drop into a glass of water and drink each day.

That’s it and it seems almost too easy. I tried 8GREENS for a week and here’s what I found.

First of all, it really is super easy. I just drop the tablet into a glass of cold water every night, wait about three minutes for it to dissolve, and drink it as fast as I can.

And it doesn't taste bad! For something that has all of these vegetables in it it tastes delicious, like a fun, fizzy lemonade.

Now, the only hard part is the price. It is $14 for 8 tablets at Nordstrom, or you can subscribe on the 8GREENS website. Now, $2 a drink isn't bad but it feels like a lot when you're going through a pack of 8GREENS almost once a week.

However, if you aren't eating any leafy greens during the week it is totally worth it.

Best,
Alyssa

THE SUPPLEMENTS I SWEAR BY FOR ENERGY, STRESS-RELIEF, AND OVERALL HEALTH

In an ideal universe, I’d get all of the nutrients my body needs from my totally perfect diet.

Protein from perfectly cooked sous vide eggs and meats and vitamins and antioxidants from juices and smoothies made in my Vitamix with perfectly fresh farmers market produce.

My actual universe, of course, is a little more complicated.

The crazy busy pace of modern life means a few things. I’m often eating on the go while doing three other things, and the food that’s readily available isn’t always the most nutrient-dense. Plus, the stress of trying to do it all means nutrients that can make my body more resilient and resistant to inflammation are even more important.

So, sometimes you gotta supplement. I have found that supplements (as well as the healing properties of aromatherapy) have helped me sleep when I’m supposed to, fight off germs, and keep my stamina up when work/travel/life gets intense. Here are are the supplements that are my partners in crime.

High-quality green powders are a great way to get in a mega-dose of micronutrients—vitamins, minerals, antioxidants—when you need it. It’s like eating a trough of healthy salads by just taking a few sips. And since I travel a lot, I love to throw these tablets by 8 Greens in my bag and mix them into a water bottle at the airport, before confronting the pleasures of air travel. Super powers.

10 Small Steps to Lead a Healthier Life

I'm by no means a 'health nut'. I love an occasional Taco Bell run, I love a gin and tonic or glass of champagne, red meat is my favorite and working out is not my favorite. I don't really follow fad diets, and I'm not a gym rat or vegan. However, I totally believe in 'everything in moderation' and also making small healthy choices day in and day out.

The key to keeping up with making healthier choices is making them extremely easy to follow and maintain no matter where you are on the healthy lifestyle spectrum!

Do you do anything quick and easy in your daily routine to lead a healthier life? I'd love to hear your tips! Here are some things that I do:

Drink Water
Well, duh. I used to be a huge diet coke fan. In high school, my mom literally stopped buying it because I would drink so much of it. Then in college, we had it readily available and I easily drank it once a day. Now, I drink it maybe once a month at most. I've completely cut it out of my diet and it wasn't even that hard! I definitely suggest trying to cut something like this out of your lifestyle.

Now, I stick to water or sparkling water. I really love Trader Joe's brand of sparkling waters, Gerolsteiner mineral water, or Schweppe's lemon lime sparkling water! If you are someone who has a tough time drinking plain water, these are all good alternatives (although none are as good as plain old water). I've also recently discovered these 8 Greens tablets. My friend Aly suggested them and they're delicious and jam packed with vitamins. I also always make sure I have a full Tervis full of water on my desk at all times. Just having it immediately available is the first step!

Recipes for Radiance

Secrets of Tatiana Sorokko

Here’s how Sorokko stays secure in mind, body and spirit:

The New Natural

Brand founder Lady Dawn Russell is taking her all-natural and holistic movement to the next level with her launch of The 8Greens Cookbook, which incorporates the tablet in 40 simple, family-tested recipes and meals.

The 8 Greens Your Body Shouldn’t Live Without

This new tablet has as much Vitamin C as 6 oranges, as much Vitamin B15 as 15 cups of broccoli, and as much vitamin B6 as 6 cups of spinach, without the hassle of peeling, cooking, and eating all of that.

I recently stumbled on 8 Greens, a tablet that contains the ingredients found in green drinks. You just drop it in water, let it fizz and enjoy. It was a revelation, like the universe saying, “I’ll give you one free pass, buddy.” 8 Greens’ creator, Dawn Russell, spent four years developing a product that everyone said couldn’t exist: an almost-zero-sugar, 10-calorie, refreshingly tasty green-drink tablet made with ingredients including blue-green algae from Oregon’s pristine Lake Klamath. “My obsession was, how can I help busy people build basic health in a way that’s, ‘Take it, go, get on with your day,’” she explains.
